How to Join the NITP Lagos State Chapter

Membership in the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) Lagos State Chapter is open to students, graduates, and professionals committed to advancing planning practice and sustainable urban development. The application process is transparent, efficient, and supported by the Chapter’s dedicated secretariat.

Step 1: Determine Your Membership Category

Select the category that corresponds to your academic or professional status:

Category Eligibility Criteria Designation
Student Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or postgraduate programme in Urban and Regional Planning or a related field (e.g., Geography, Environmental Management, Architecture, or International Management with planning relevance).
Graduate Holder of a Bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Urban and Regional Planning or a closely related discipline. GMNITP
Full Member Graduate with at least two years of supervised professional experience and completion of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), where applicable. MNITP
Fellow Minimum of ten years of substantive professional practice, leadership, and demonstrable contributions to the planning profession. FNITP
Honorary Member Individuals outside the planning profession who have rendered exceptional service to urban development in Nigeria. Hon. MNITP / Hon. FNITP

Note: International students and graduates may be considered for Student or Graduate membership, subject to assessment of programme relevance by the Chapter.

Step 2: Prepare Required Documentation

Gather the following documents in clear digital format (PDF or high-resolution JPEG):

  • Duly completed NITP Membership Application Form (to be requested from the Lagos State Chapter Secretariat)
  • Recent passport-sized photograph (white background)
  • Valid means of identification (e.g., National Identity Card, International Passport, or Driver’s Licence)
  • Academic credentials:
    • Students: Official admission letter and current student identification card
    • Graduates: Certified copies of degree/HND certificate and academic transcript
  • NYSC discharge or exemption certificate (for Full Membership applicants)
  • Evidence of professional experience (comprehensive CV and signed reference letter from employer or mentor) — required for Full and Fellow categories

Step 3: Submit Application and Pay Fees

Applications may be submitted as follows:

  • Email: Send a request for the application form—and, upon completion, your application with supporting documents—to any of the following official Lagos Chapter addresses:

    Block H, Plot H6, C.I.P.M. Road (CBD), Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos State

Upon verification of your documents, the Secretariat will provide details for payment of the applicable membership fee. Student membership is offered at a subsidised rate to support early-career engagement.

Step 4: Verification and Onboarding

Applications are processed within five to ten working days. Upon approval, new members receive:

  • Official membership certificate and identification card
  • Login credentials for the NITP Members’ Portal
  • Welcome package, including the Lagos Chapter handbook, annual activity calendar, and an introduction to mentorship and professional development opportunities

Support for Newly Enrolled Students

Recognising the unique challenges faced by students who join academic programmes mid-session or from overseas, the Lagos State Chapter provides:

  • Provisional membership while final admission documents are being processed
  • Academic onboarding support—including guidance on course alignment, internship sourcing, and preparation for the Technical and Professional Examinations (TOPREC)
  • Flexible payment arrangements for student membership fees
